LEGACY DEXTER CATTLE REGISTRY
|
| IF YOUR REGISTRY IS NOT BECOMING TO YOU . . YOU SHOULD BE COMING TO LEGACY |
The Legacy Dexter Cattle Registry is an expansion of the Dexter Cattle Database of genotype samples stored and recorded at the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory, University of California, Davis.
This genotype database was established in 2004. When the Legacy preservation project began it was determined all foundation animals entering the program would be required to be genotyped and that all calves born to foundation stock would also be required to be genotyped and parentage confirmed to establish validity and integrity for the preservation effort.
Other breeders believing the gentoyping of Dexter cattle to be important in the pedigree process and an excellent method of insuring integrity in their personal herd pedigrees added their herds to the database. The database began to grow along with the number of animals in the Legacy project.
In the fall of 2009 and spring of 2010 events occured in the political associations which register Dexter cattle. Breeders were threatened because of political affiliation or criticism of leadership with losing their membership, and another political situation threatened to endanger an association and it's registry. Concerned for breeders who might need an alternate registry to safeguard their herd pedigrees, a decision was made to expand the Legacy Registy and invite all Dexter owners to participate.
The main requirement to participate in the registry is that the animal being registered have both a sire and dam with current and qualifying registration status recorded in any Dexter cattle registry worldwide and the animal being registered must be genotyped. When the animal's sire or dam are in the genotype database parentage qualification will be automatic.
The Legacy Registry is a secure registry. One copy of all genotypes and their registration numbers are stored in the database at VGL-UCD. Another copy of this reference information is stored online with the webmaster. A third copy of the electronic records is stored by Legacy in electronic form with a fourth hard copy as well.
There are no members in Legacy. There are no membership fees. The lust for power and control have created unnecessary strife for Dexter owners and breeders in both current associations. Legacy determined a Registry with simple rules and ease of participation was the answer for breeders who simply wish to have their pedigrees recorded and validated in a registry.
Registration is simple online with the services application process as is the payment of fees for tests and registration. Results and registration are emailed in PDF file format and the owner can save both an electronic copy as well as print a hard copy for their records.
Transfer fees for the recording the change of ownership are $10.00.
Testing fees are the best in the breed!
All owners of Dexter cattle are invited to genotype and register their cattle with Legacy. . . offering the ONLY Dexter cattle genotype registry in the US. Legacy is unique and simple ! !

Currently the Legacy Registry is seperated into two categories - horned and polled. There is an additional option for breeders of Dexter cattle whose recorded pedigrees denote fullblood status to use the herd identifier LEGACY upon pedigree review and approval.
The Legacy registry currently identifies all Dexters with either an "H" for Horned or "P" for polled and Dexters are registered accordingly into the Horned Registry or the Polled Registry.
Legacy is currently considering updating this system and dividing the registry into four categories.
Your imput and opinions are welcomed. Please email: Share the Legacy
The new categories for the registry would be identified by one of the following letters after the DNA genotype case number.
L - Legacy qualified Dexters
T - Traditional horned Dexters This category denotes Dexters imported into the American herd prior to 1980
M- Modern Horned Dexters This category denotes Dexters imported into the American herd after 1980
P- Polled Dexters This category denotes all polled Dexter cattle
These new categories will offer breeders additional information as to the bloodline status of their Dexter cattle.
Your opinions are needed and welcome. Legacy is currently the premier registry in America for establishing pedigree integrity in the American herdbooks and will become the must trusted registry in America. This is YOUR registry and your comments and suggestions are invited.
